Christianity according to the Wesley's has come to be closely connected in United Methodism to a particular way of interpreting scripture. It has often been called the "Wesleyan Quadrilateral." Unfortunately we have a tendency, at least among the people I've met, to assume that something that has sides has equal sides. The term itself, "quadrilateral," leads people to believe that we hold scripture, tradition, reason and Christian experience as equally valid. Wesleyans do not.
This image has come to me several times over the past few years and I've determined to share it. I think it is more in line with Wesley's own understanding. Tradition, reason and Christian experience exist in the ecosystem of scripture and help us to understand it as the authority of the four.
