Mitchell Lewis: Witherington, Trebilco and the Terms of Early Christian Group Identity

Original post at http://milewis.wordpress.com/2012/11/26/witherington-trebilco/

Ben Witherington has just completed a valuable multi-part review of Paul Trebilco’s Self-Designations and Group Identity in the New Testament. Trebilco’s book looks at how the early Christian community understood itself by examining the words and images it used to describe itself. The categories include:

  1. Brethren
  2. Believer
  3. Holy Ones / Saints
  4. Assembly / Church
  5. Disciple
  6. Way
  7. Christian

Each term in the preceding list is linked to the corresponding article in Witherington’s review. Unfortunately, Trebilco’s book retails for $100 and is out of my price range.
