Alleged counterfeiter puts Lincoln on the hundred; Target store accepts it

Police in North Attleborough, Mass. say a counterfeiter mistakenly put the image of President Abraham Lincoln on fake hundred-dollar bills – and clerks at Target (NYSE: TGT) stores in North Attleborough, Mass. accepted the bills on three occasions.

Dana T. Leland, 29, of Pawtucket, R.I., was arrested in Rhode Island, the Sun Chronicle reports, and arraigned Wednesday in Attleboro District Court.

According to police, Leland used the counterfeit bills on three occasions at a Target store in North Attleborough, buying socks and other items worth less than $25, and pocketing the change.

No word who noticed the alleged phony bills after Leland's departure – or what Target's policy might be regarding accepting (or rejecting) large-denomination bills. Police in North Attleborough wouldn't take calls from the press and a Target representative couldn't immediately be reached.

The hundred-dollar-bill bears Benjamin Franklin's portrait. Lincoln appears on the five.
