Today’s Reading Hosea 13:7 – Amos 9:10
Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz, and Gayle King are three people who most of America know. Perhaps we don’t want to know who they are but we do. One of my first years in ministry, Dr. Oz came to town to speak at a local club. I couldn’t wait to see him. After all, he was famous and important, Oprah told me so. You know Oprah of course. Everyone knows Oprah.
She is one of a handful of people who are known worldwide simply by a first name. For years, people would flock to the Oprah show to glean important information and to be told and shown how to live better lives. Oprah had some real power. She still does, of course, but not as much. Yet, we still all know her by Oprah.
One of my favorite songs recently speaks to this phenomenon, it is a song called “What if his people prayed”, from Casting Crowns:
What if the life that we pursue
Came from a hunger for the truth
What if the family turned to Jesus
Stopped asking Oprah what to do
I love this song. I though about it while I was reading the book of Joel this morning. In the book, the people are called to a time of fasting and prayer. A time to remember who God is and what God will do. It will be a time of repentance and a time of grace. It won’t be an easy time to turn away from choices that they have made but it must be done. In other words, it’s time to live right, even if living right will be difficult.
The song always reminds me that the world may have suggestions and offer opportunity but I need to keep my eye on God. Oprah is a wonderful person and has done wonderful things but our hope comes from the one who made heaven and earth. The promises of that one are abundant life not a quick fix or even a new car. (And you get a new car…and you get a new car).
What would happen if we turned to Jesus?
Are you ready to find out?
