Do you regularly preach from the lectionary?

More on Lay Speakers

When we have taken classes on Lay Speaking/preaching, we were told, one doesn't HAVE to follow the Lectionary for any given Sunday. We were also told as Certified LaySpeakers, "Always have a sermon in your pocket, you never know when you may be called upon"; with this in mind, it would be impossible to adhere strictly to the Lectionary. Let me add here, I DO NOT preach, I feel preaching is for professionals, I simply bring a message that God has inspired me to deliver.

Yes. But, I was a Lectionary

Yes. But, I was a Lectionary preacher, preaching from the old, historic lectionaries, before the New Common Lectionary was even widely adopted. Some years I leave the NCL aside and look at the historic Lectionaries. Series preaching drives me nuts. I'm waaaaay bored with the series long before it's over.

oops

I didn't realize I wasn't logged in when I made that comment re: historic lectionaries.

lectionary

I like Tom Bandy's critique of the Revised Common Lectionary in his book "The Uncommon Lectionary." I like series preaching. You can even incorporate the old RCL at times into a series without anyone knowing!

Always. . . except when I don't

Always.

Always.

Lectionary-most the time

For the most part I preach from the lectionary however there are times when covering a topic in a series that I deviate.

Lay speakers

You may have meant this poll primarily for ordained ministers, but I had to answer in the affirmative as a lay speaker, even though many of the small country churches where I tend to fill in don't necessarily use it.

For me, I find it good discipline; it keeps me from just indulging myself when it comes to sermon topics.
